Adults and children over 12 years:Flagyl may be taken in pill form or by mouth as instructed by your doctor. To ensure the correct dosage and to get the most benefit from it, it’s best to take it on an empty stomach, with a full glass of water, between 1 and 3 hours after you swallow the tablet. Flagyl should not be used more than once in any 24-hour period.

More serious side effects may occur, such as difficulty speaking, signs of an allergic reaction, trouble swallowing, chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations (feeling of high or low blood pressure), and severe headache. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, you should seek immediate medical attention.
Less common but more serious side effects include problems with memory, language, and vision. More serious side effects of metronidazole may occur, such as trouble speaking or seeing clearly, hearing loss, prolonged erection (priapism), and painful or prolonged ejaculation. If you notice any of the following symptoms, contact your doctor immediately: severe headache, vision problems, fast or uneven heartbeat, fainting, cloudy or painful skin, and dark to bloody stools.
